I recently reinstall Centos 6 and I still have this problem. When I execute system-config-network a terminal window open with the possibility to configure the card but I can't see any option to start it! I know there is some issue with the the library that generate the gnome panel so I'm stuck in the terminal window.
What's the command the start the network manager in graphical mode? But gnome-panel is still missing! But on the login screen, is there a box to choose your environment?

So clearly, it's not gone anyway the top bar with menus and shutdown options etc. I also noticed that while I say it's missing, it's technically still there, albeit just a black unresponsive bar across the bottom of the screen. So I guess my real question is, why is it not showing anything? And can anybody please help me out?
It turns out that for some reason the settings for my bottom panel taskbar had been altered. This opened a little menu where I could select Add to panel What I needed to add was 'Windows List'which solved my problem. On the latest version of Kali 2. FWIW Daan's suggestion did not work for me, precisely because my gnome-panel was so corrupted due apparently to an Ubuntu bug which stretches back literally years, according to the Ubuntu bug tracker that I could not even right-click on the panel.
Absolutely nothing worked. After following this entry's instructions and rebooting everything works perfectly again. HOWEVER Daan is right, removing these directories will revert any customizations you've made toolbar launchers, background image to how Ubuntu looked when you first installed it.

How can I get back that panel. If you want the old Windows look to use your kind of languagethen you should consider switching to Xfce, or at least xfce4-panel, which is similar to gnome-panel. It even supports gnome-panel applets.
Gnome2 as you've been used to, is deprecated and not developed anymore.
